In a district in which police station chiefs are notorious for not registering cases, even for kidnappings for ransom, a sub-inspector serving in Muzaffarnagar filed a case of his dog being snatched away by his son-in-law.
But, the wonder did not end here. Two police teams were immediately formed to recover the dog, which the family claims is of an "expensive American breed." One of the teams was dispatched to Muzaffarnagar district, where the woman's in-laws live, in the Nai Mandi police station area.
Another was sent to Naveen Shahdara to find the son-in-law, Sachin Chowdhary, who was "now reported to be living there, after taking up a job."
His address is not known to the police. The police have registered a case of loot and criminal intimidation.
The incident allegedly occurred on Tuesday morning, at the residence of sub-inspector Virendra Singh, on the first floor of the Senior Citizen's Society building, in Greater Noida's Kasna police station area. He is posted in the personal staff of the Muzaffarnagar senior superintendent of police. But, he was not contactable on Wednesday.
But, his wife, Rekha Singh, told this correspondent, "Sachin was trying to marry again, on February 11 last, in Preet Vihar in Delhi. But, we found that out in time, stopped the wedding, and even filed a report at the Preet Vihar police station. He is trying to threaten us into withdrawing that case, or at least not pursuing it further. He took the dog away to blackmail us. My, daughter, Yukti, lives with me, with her 5 year old daughter, studying at Ryan International School."
She said she chased Sachin's car, but could not catch up.
A police officer confided that "there are no witnesses of the incident. We do not really know if the dog was really" snatched away."
But, the Kasna police station staff is giving the case the highest priority.
Said a Kasna police official, "Sachin, and Virendra Singh's daughter, Yukti, were married in 2000. Sachin's father is principal of a prominent agricultural college.
"Then, the couple developed differences between them. And, in 2001, Yukti filed a case of Sachin torturing her for dowry. For a year now, the couple has been living separately. Yukti is living with her parents. And, Sachin and his father came in the morning, and took away the dog away at the point of a pistol. We are still investigating why.
